Our partner schools are situated in contexts that may include racially, culturally and linguistically diverse student populations that have been historically underserved in US public schools. With a focus on culturally responsive teaching; relationships with students, family and the community; and innovation in teaching and learning, we are committed to reciprocal partnerships with our school partners and the community. Programs and Services In addition to teacher preparation, additional IUE key elements include community involvement and support for schools. Specific programs include Grow Your Own initiatives, Career Changer opportunities for those shifting their profession to become teachers, and service to schools in support of beginning and practicing teachers. Learn more About IUE’s Teacher Preparation Programs IUE teacher preparation is a cohort program specially designed to enhance preparation for teaching in Kansas City urban schools. Students admitted to the IUE receive scholarships, and are part of a cohort with experiences that include enhanced professional development, mentoring and increased experiences in partner schools in the Kansas City community. Learn more Apply to the IUE The Institute for Urban Education (IUE) is a scholarship and supplemental preparation program that supports students seeking teacher certification (undergraduate OR Master of Arts in Teaching) at UMKC. IUE scholarships are available to incoming freshman, transfer students and students applying to the Master of Arts in Teaching program. In exchange for their IUE scholarship, students commit to teach in an IUE partner urban district for four years following graduation. Learn more History The IUE has been a premiere teacher preparation program in Kansas City since 2005. The first set of graduates began teaching in 2009.
